Lake Erie is the shallowest, most southerly of the Laurentian Great Lakes. The lake's fisheries were first exploited in the mid- to late-1800s. The Convention on Great Lakes Fisheries in 1954 brought cooperation between Canada and the US in fisheries management. 

Yellow Perch (Perca flavescens) are caught using small mesh gillnet and small mesh trap net. Walleye (Sander vitreus) using large mesh gillnet.
