About

Swordfish are cosmopolitan pelagic predators, and can be found in the tropical and temperate waters of all the oceans between 45°N and 44°S. They are distributed widely in the Atlantic Ocean. Swordfish can reach a weight of more than 500kg – females grow faster than males, and reach a larger maximum size. Larger individuals are found in deeper colder waters, and males are more prevalent in warmer waters than females. Of all billfish, the swordfish are the species with the greatest tolerance to temperature, tolerating waters ranging from 5 to 27°C. They can live up to 15 years.

The fisheries are managed internationally by the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT), with management measures implemented on a national level.
